Bien entendu, quand j’ai vu Etched Lingerie apparaître dans mes recommandations Instagram, je les ai suivis immédiatement, mais non sans un certain scepticisme. Leur gamme de tailles (75-90 E-G) me paraissait assez cohérente pour une nouvelle marque pour bonnets profonds, mais tous les problèmes qu’ils prétendaient résoudre me faisaient penser aux soutiens-gorges mal ajustés, de la bande qui “remonte”, aux bretelles qui “tombent” en passant par l’armature qui “s’enfonce dans la peau”. Ajouté au design qui ne m’impressionnait pas particulièrement, et j’étais assez dubitative au début. Ceci dit, leur page de conseils en bien-aller et leur tableau de tailles semblaient tous les deux assez justes donc mes doutes se sont un peu atténués au fil du temps. Quand l’équipe d’Etched m’a contactée afin de m’envoyer un de leurs ensembles, j’ai sauté sur l’occasion pour comprendre de quoi il retournait vraiment, m’attendant, en éternelle pessimiste que je suis, à être déçue.
Needless to say, when I saw Etched Lingerie popping up in my instagram recommendations, I followed them immediately but not without scepticism. Their size range (28-34 DD-F) seemed quite relevant for a new full bust brand, but all the issues they were addressing made me think of ill-fitting bras, from the band “riding up” to the straps “falling off” or the underwire “poking”. Add to that the design which did not exactly wow me and I was left quite dubious at first. That being said, both their fit tips page and size chart appeared to be spot on, so my doubts were a bit watered down over time. When the Etched team contacted me to send me one of their sets to review, I jumped on the opportunity to see what the hype was about, kind of expecting, in my typical pessimistic way, to be disappointed.
J’aimerais presque vous dire que j’avais raison et que leur produit n’est qu’une non-innovation dispendieuse, mais j’avais tort. C’est honnêtement un très bon soutien-gorge.
Si vous connaissez (et aimez) déjà Empreinte, la coupe et le système de tailles sont assez similaires : des armatures étroites, des bonnets avec une bonne projection et mon 80H habituel devient un 80E aussi bien chez Empreinte que chez Etched. C’est déjà un bon début pour moi, mais ça ne s’arrête pas là.
D’abord, le dos est étonnamment confortable. J’ai tendance à porter les bandes assez bas donc c’est agréable d’avoir un soutien-gorge conçu pour être porté ainsi. J’étais un peu inquiète face à toutes les baleines puisque j’ai tendance à les retirer aussi vite que possible mais celles-ci sont vraiment utiles du point de vue du bien-aller et je ne les sens pas du tout quand je porte Maya. Le dos est fait de 8 parties au lieu de 2 à 4 habituellement. Je ne suis peut être pas la meilleure personne pour juger du maintien puisque mes seins sont assez légers et faciles à vivre, mais je trouve ce design bien étudié. Il arrive que les dos de mes soutiens-gorges se replient sur eux-mêmes, ce qui peut être assez douloureux, mais cela n’arrive jamais avec Maya.
I would sort of like to tell you that I was right and that their product is only an expensive non-innovation, but I stand corrected. This is a pretty darn good bra.
If you already know and love Empreinte, it is more or less the same fit and sizing system : narrow underwire, projected cups and my usual 30FF turns into a 30DD/E with both Etched and Empreinte. This is already a good start in my books, but there’s more to it.
Firstly, the back band does feel like a gentle, supportive hug. I tend to wear my bands quite low so it is nice to have a bra that is actually designed to be worn like that. I was a bit worried about all the boning because I usually do away with any extra boning but this one is useful from a fit stand point and I can’t feel it at all when I’m wearing Maya. The band is made of 8 parts instead of the usual 2 to 4 parts. I might not be the best subject to assess support because my breasts are pretty light and low-maintenance, but I find that this design feature really helps. Sometimes my bra bands collapse and fold onto themselves, which can hurt quite a bit, but it never happens with Maya.
Passons aux bonnets! Souvent, il faut choisir entre confort et forme, mais pas avec les soutien-gorges Etched. Je trouve que les soutien-gorges non-préformés gagnent toujours à avoir autant de parties que possible. Un de mes soutien-gorges préférés (de la ligne Rosie for Autograph chez Marks and Spencer) est construit en 5 parties, et je trouvais déjà ça assez “révolutionnaire” quand je l’ai découvert il y a quelques années. Maya n’a pas seulement 5 parties, la partie supérieure est en plus faite de dentelle extensible qui s’adapte donc parfaitement aux asymétries et aux légères variations de tailles. Au final, la forme est ronde, naturelle et légèrement minimisée, ce qui est assez rare.
Les bretelles restent aussi bien en place au fil de la journée grâce aux anneaux en forme de coeur. Il m’arrive d’avoir des problèmes de bretelles tombantes même avec des soutien-gorges au bien-aller apparemment impeccable, donc j’apprécie toujours ceux qui se font totalement oublier.
Je n’étais pas très sûre que la hauteur des bonnets me convienne à cause du “panneau élevé” mentionné sur le site web d’Etched, mais ils me vont parfaitement alors que j’ai les seins assez hauts placés. Cela ne devrait donc pas poser particulièrement de problème, sauf éventuellement si vous êtes vraiment très petit-e.
Les tissus sont doux et résistants et bien que je n’ai aucune connaissance en couture, tout semble net et bien fait. J’aime aussi beaucoup le fait que toutes les informations habituellement inscrites sur l’étiquette sont imprimées à l’intérieur de l’attache, ce qui fait un détail agaçant de moins à prendre en compte. Mon seul problème est que les bonnets plissent un peu près de l’armature, mais c’est plus un souci de couture que de coupe et c’est très supportable.
Now onto the cups! Too often, comfort comes at the expense of shape, but not with Etched bras. In my opinion, when it comes to unpadded bras, the more parts the better. One of my favourite bras ever (from the Rosie for Autograph range at Marks and Spencer) already featured 5 parts and I did find it quite revolutionary when I first discovered it. Maya does not only have 5 parts, it also has stretch lace at the top which really helps with unevenness and/or size variations. The result is a round, natural and slightly minimized shape that is often hard to come by.
The straps also stay well in place throughout the day thanks to the heart rings. Slipping straps is sometimes a problem for me even with seemingly well fitting bras, so I really appreciate bras I can completely forget about. I was a bit worried due to the mention of the “taller panel” on Etched’s website, but the underwires happen to be just the right height for me and my highly placed chest; so that should not be a problem, except maybe on very small frames.
The materials feel very soft and sturdy and while I have absolutely no sewing knowledge, everything seems neat and well made. I also really like the fact that all the information that usually goes in the tag is printed on the inside of the hook and eye, which is one less annoying detail to care about. My only issue is that the cup fabric puckers up slightly near the armpit due to the stitching, rather than due to a genuine fit problem, which is very bearable.
Alors que je ne trouvais pas le design très intéressant de prime abord, j’aime assez le soutien-gorge en personne. C’est un bon basique, sans être ennuyeux, et au vu de l’excellence de la coupe c’est amplement suffisant. Evidemment je préfèrerais quelque chose d’un peu plus original, mais je sais aussi que ce n’est pas au goût de tout le monde et que la marque débute tout juste.
Malgré toutes ses promesses, j’ai été un peu déçue par la culotte. Je comptais ignorer son côté un peu grand-mère si elle avait été très confortable, mais comme 95% des culottes elle me rentre dans les fesses donc je l’ai donnée à ma mère qui l’apprécie beaucoup plus que moi. Elle a des points positifs : elle est bien couvrante, le tissu est très doux et elle est invisible sous les vêtements. Elle ne me convient simplement pas personnellement. De fait, je suis à la recherche d’un faux coordonné pour le soutien-gorge, et je pense notamment à cette culotte Ohhh Lulu.
S’il y a une chose qu’Etched pourrait améliorer, c’est la transparence sur les conditions de fabrication. Leurs produits sont faits en Chine, ce qui n’est pas nécessairement une mauvaise chose puisque la plupart de la main d’oeuvre qualifiée pour la lingerie se trouve en Chine et que toutes les usines chinoises ne sont pas des ateliers de misère. Je trouve cependant qu’une page avec une charte éthique et quelques mots et images sur leurs employés serait un ajout judicieux à leur site web.
Although the design did not do much for me originally, I rather like the bra in person. It is a good, not too boring basic and given the greatness of the fit, it’s more than acceptable. I would of course prefer something more daring, but I also know that this is not what everyone is looking for and that the brand is only getting started.
Despite all their promises, I was a bit let down by the knickers. I thought I could forgo their slight granny-ish vibe if there were really comfortable, but they lost the fight against my legendary hungry bum, so I just gave them to my Mum who enjoys wearing them much more than me. They do have positive points : great coverage, soft fabric and invisibleness under clothing. It is just that they do not work for me personally. I am thus on the look-out for a nice mis-match to the bra and I am thinking of getting these Ohhh Lulu knickers.
If there is one thing I think Etched could do better, it is transparency about manufacturing. Their products are Made in Chine, which is not necessarily a bad thing since most of the lingerie-making skills of the world are in China and not all Chinese factories are sweatshops. However, a page with an ethics charter and a few words and pictures about their employees would be a welcome addition to their website in my eye.
Ma commande est arrivée enveloppée dans du papier de soie avec une carte postale et un guide de bien-aller assortis, comme on peut s’y attendre avec une marque de luxe. Le prix peut sembler assez élevé, mais je pense que beaucoup de travail a été fourni pour concevoir ces soutien-gorges et il semble plutôt juste. Il est en accord avec les autres marques similaires, très orientée sur le bien-aller comme Empreinte et PrimaDonna. Je sais qu’il peut être difficile de mettre autant d’argent dans un nouveau produit, donc j’espère que mon avis vous sera utile, que vous connaissiez déjà Etched ou que ce soit la première fois que vous en entendez parler.
Pour résumer, si vous détestez les armatures il y a peu de chances que vous aimiez un jour un soutien-gorge à armatures, même s’il est particulièrement innovant. Si vous n’êtes pas contre les armatures mais êtes aussi exigent-e que moi sur le bien-aller et le confort, Etched pourrait être une option intéressante à explorer. C’est une bonne alternative aux marques polonaises pour les personnes dont les seins ne s’entendent pas avec la plupart des marques occidentales. En plus, vous n’avez pas besoin de commander en Pologne, ce qui sera certainement apprécié par les Américain-e-s!
Ce soutien-gorge est le parfait équilibre entre confort et maintien pour moi, et je me surprend à le mettre beaucoup plus souvent que je ne le pensais, dès que je sens que tous mes autres soutiens-gorges finiront par me gêner au fil de la journée.
My order came wrapped in tissue paper with a complementary postcard and fit guide, in a true luxury lingerie manner. The pricing might seem a little steep, but I think a lot of work has gone into designing and making these bras so it feels quite fair. It is on par with similar, very fit-orientated brands such as Empreinte and PrimaDonna. I know it is a bit difficult to put so much money in a new product so I hope this review will prove useful if you were interested in Etched, or even if it is your first time hearing about them.
To sum it up, if you hate underwires it is unlikely that you will enjoy wearing any underwired bra on the market, no matter how innovative it might be. However, if you are ok with underwires but are as exigent with fit and comfort as I am, Etched might be an interested option for you to try. It is a great alternative to Polish brands for people with breasts that do not typically get on well with Western brands. And good thing is, you do not have to order all the way from Poland, which I know Americans will appreciate!
This bra is the perfect combination of comfort and support for me, and I find myself reaching for it way more often than I thought, whenever I feel like anything else would annoy me throughout the day.
