The Young Girls of Rochefort-inspired Lingerie / Lingerie inspirée par Les Demoiselles de Rochefort

Regarder Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, c’est comme manger des bonbons une fois adulte: c’est presque écoeurant et pourtant étonnamment addictif, avec un arrière-goût de lingerie. Je le revoie toujours avec plaisir pour son esthétique travaillée, surtout sa superbe palette de couleurs, mais aussi pour ces chansons entêtantes et l’humour qui se cache derrière sa mièvrerie apparente. J’ai grandi avec et cela reste mon feel-good movie de référence. Cinquante ans après sa sortie, la magie a peut être un peu disparu: Françoise Dorléac et Jacques Demy nous ont tous les deux quittés beaucoup trop tôt, et désormais Catherine Deneuve est apparemment occupée à promouvoir sa misogynie internalisée. Le visionner aujourd’hui peut être une expérience douce-amère, mais je le recommanderais tout de même car c’est à mes yeux un classique méconnu du cinéma français. Créer une sélection s’en inspirant était une de mes priorités en démarrant ce blog et m’adonner à cette relecture mielleuse des années 1960 comme un rêve aux couleurs pastels à travers la lingerie s’est révélé plutôt amusant. Watching The Young Girls of Rochefort is like eating sweets as a grown-up: it is sickly-sweet and yet strangely addictive, with an aftertaste of nostalgia. I keep going back to it for its aesthetics, especially its gorgeous colour palette, but also for its catchy songs and its slight wittiness hidden behind all the cheesiness. I grew up with it and it is still my go-to feel-good movie. Fifty years after its release, the magic might have slightly vanished: both Jacques Demy and Françoise Dorléac passed away far too young, and Catherine Deneuve is apparently busy showcasing her internalized misogyny. Watching it now might be quite a bittersweet experience, but I would still recommend it for I personally consider it as an underrated classic of French cinema. Creating a selection inspired by it was at the top of my to-do-list when I started this blog and indulging in this saccharine vision of the sixties as a pastel-coloured dream through lingerie was quite entertaining.
